Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliot scored twice for England Under 21s

England Under 21s thrashed Serbia 9-1 in Euro qualifying in their first home game since winning the European Championships in the summer.

Debutant Jaden Philogene, Liverpool’s Harvey Elliot and Chelsea’s Noni Madueke all scored twice as the Three Lions made it two wins from two in their group with a stunning display.

Lee Carsley’s side are making light work of having only seven members of the squad who lifted the trophy in Georgia now available, as the next generation show there is plenty of promise for the future.

Aljosa Vasic’s strike from the edge of the box actually gave the visitors an early lead, but it wasn’t long before Hull City’s Philogene marked his debut with a curling equaliser.

Man City’s Liam Delap put the hosts ahead, converting Philogene’s cross from close range, before Liverpool’s Elliot extended the lead with a shot into the top corner from 18 yards.

England continued to dominate after the break as Chelsea’s Madueke scored his double, first drilling in after dribbling past three defenders, then slotting into the net from Rico Lewis’s backheel.

Philogene grabbed his second and the hosts’ sixth when Delap raced clear of the defence and squared the ball for the winger to tap into an empty net, before Luka Subotic deflected into his own net.

Norwich’s Jonathan Rowe made it eight when he headed in Elliot’s cross from close range, before the latter completed the scoring with a calm finish.

Carsley’s men next head to Slovakia to play Ukraine on Monday.
