The tumultuous world we live in is a roller coaster of emotions. For expectant mothers, the prospect of bringing a new life into the world carries a unique bond and many life-altering changes. However, for one new mother, her journey towards parenthood was suddenly cut short after being diagnosed with cancer during her pregnancy.

Veronica Cruz, a 31-year-old woman from London, was left shattered after being informed of her diagnosis during the 25th week of her pregnancy. ‘It was the news that one never expects. I was oblivious of the outcome that was waiting for me around the corner,’ she said.

Veronica was advised to start the treatment immediately which made her decide to deliver the baby two months before the due date. In an effort to beat the cancer, Veronica had to go through a grueling six months of chemotherapy alongside trying to cope with the everyday postpartum challenges. ‘Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to witness my baby’s growth. I missed out on that privilege which would have been one of the most beautiful experiences of my life,’ she said.

The decision to go through the chemotherapy was a daunting one yet Veronica was convinced she had to go through it in order to be cured. Despite the risks associated with chemotherapy, Veronica was determined to fight cancer. After six months of the tedious treatment, she was declared cancer-free. ‘I mustered the strength to fight through the hardships. But looking back, I’m sorry that I couldn’t witness my child’s growth and development due to cancer,’ she said.

Cancer is an insidious disease with unprecedented consequences. The diagnosis of cancer can dramatically change lives of countless individuals for the worse. But due to timely and preventive care, Veronica now resides with her family happily. We wish Veronica and her child a long and healthy life.
