Today, the House of Representatives voted to initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, an historic moment underlining the importance of checks and balances within the American government.
The House’s vote was spurred by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who cited a whistleblower complaint regarding a phone call between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as grounds for beginning the inquiry.
Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, have released a statement in response to the vote. “This inquiry will serve to confirm the truth and safeguard the Constitution and our security,” the Bidens said in a joint statement. “Our democracy demands that each of us executions our civic and moral duties and live up to the standards of the Constitution.”
The Bidens’ statement is indicative of a separation of the couple from President Trump’s actions, which have been widely criticized by key Democratic leaders as a violation of presidential conduct. During the phone call, President Trump requested Ukrainian President Zelenksy launch an investigation into formal Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.
House Democrats have argued that their vote not only upholds the integrity of the Constitution, but also sets an example of impartiality for future generations of Americans.
Despite the House’s vote to launch the inquiry, the Senate is widely believed to remain in support of the President, thus making it unlikely that President Trump will face removal from office.
