Today, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has implemented new rules which make it mandatory for all food retailers to specify any potential allergens present in their products. This decision follows the FSA’s commitment to reduce the risk of allergic reactions experienced by customers when consuming foods from restaurants, cafes and other food establishments.

All companies will now be required to clearly label on their menus any ingredients that might cause an allergic reaction in certain customers. In addition, restaurants must provide allergen information for customers upon request. This is to ensure that customers are able to make informed decisions when ordering a dish. Furthermore, information should be provided on any changes to dishes or processes which could alter the allergies present, so that customers are made aware in advance.

The FSA emphasizes that the introduction of these new guidelines will help prevent accidental exposure to potential allergens. It also encourages customers to be aware of their allergies, to demonstrate due-care when ordering, and to raise any queries about the ingredients during the ordering process.

The introduction of this policy is welcome news for many families, for whom eating safely outside their own homes has been a difficult challenge. Proof of this lies in the fact that since 2005, 11 people have lost their lives in England after suffering anaphylactic shock.

It can be expected that with these new guidelines, many customers with allergies will be able to safely enjoy eating out at restaurants. This will ensure that all customers have the right to enjoy their meal, free from the worry of possible reactions to allergenic compounds.
